Stephanie Mills: Breathless

WUNC--The State of Things
w/Frank Stasio

For nearly five years, Grammy Award-winning singer Stephanie Mills stepped away from the spotlight to concentrate on motherhood. The R&B veteran says she is excited to return to music with the forthcoming release of a studio project called "Breathless." Mills, who makes her home in Charlotte, NC, joins host Frank Stasio to talk about a long, celebrated music career, which began for her at the tender age of 9 and includes originating the role of Dorothy in "The Wiz" during its initial Broadway run. She'll also share how the losses of friends Michael Jackson and Teddy Pendergrass were the tragic inspirations for one of her new tunes. Duke University professor and music scholar Mark Anthony Neal also joins the conversation to help put Mills' career in context.
