Meet Big Daddy Kane

Big Daddy Kane is one of the most influential voices from the golden era of hip-hop. In the 1980s, Kane entered the music scene with style, sex appeal and the skills to rhyme over rapid-fire beats – a combination that sealed his place in hip-hop history as one of the best emcees of all-time. The Brooklyn-born rapper now makes his home in North Carolina where he continues his creative work. He joins host Frank Stasio to talk about his influential career and his role as a rap music pioneer.

Reading the Language of Rape Culture
Wednesday, April 06 2011

Most cases of rape and sexual assault never make the news. But in recent weeks, horrific stories about victims of sexual violence have created national headlines. Some language used in the reporting of these cases and public reactions to them has caused controversy. How we articulate ideas about rape sheds light on American perceptions of violence, gender and race. Host Frank Stasio discusses the language and the law surrounding rape with a panel of guests including documentary filmmaker Aishah Shahidah Simmons; Mark Anthony Neal, a professor of African and African-American Studies at Duke University; Melissa Harris-Perry, associate professor of politics and African-American Studies at Princeton University; and Mary R. Block, associate professor of history at Valdosta State University.

Lockhart talks to host Frank Stasio about her latest work and responses to it.

The Music of Spike Lee

WUNC - The State of Things with Frank Stasio

The Music of Spike Lee

From “Do the Right Thing” to “Get on the Bus,” director Spike Lee’s movies are rife with social and political commentary. So it’s no wonder a college professor would mine the director’s repertoire for class discussion. But this fall, Duke Professor Mark Anthony Neal is looking beyond the scripts. His class, “Spike Lee and the New Black Aesthetic,” will examine the messages in Lee’s work and the impact his films had on black cultural arts. Today, Neal joins host Frank Stasio to give us a course preview and talk about the powerful music in Lee's movies.
